Welcome to the website of YOU[th] Against Poverty C.I.C [YAP], a Community Interest Company based in Birmingham, UK. The organisation was formed in 2017 by Bournville College’s A-level Sociology students, who were concerned by the impact of neo-liberalism on the Welfare State and the subsequent demonisation of the poor in Birmingham. The organisation aims to raise public awareness of the nature and extent of poverty and inequality in the city, and to inform policy makers of the factors contributing to the social disadvantage and destitution of groups and individuals.
We are YOU[th] Against Poverty C.I.C.
We understand how social research can empower disadvantaged groups, by highlighting their concerns and providing them with a political voice. The aim of our research is to highlight the consequences of poverty in urban spaces and the ways in which inequality is mediated through cultural, age, gender, ethnic and social class differences. YOU[th] Against Poverty take the view that the current political climate is nurturing a sense of apathy and inertia towards disenfranchised groups. We seek to engage the public, to help us change social and political attitudes toward poverty and inequality. Our slogan is:
