The Help 4 the Homeless Project

Help 4 the Homeless [H4tH] is a longitudinal project, conducted by various YOU[th] Against Poverty [YAP] Committees.  The Members collect donations from the public and re-distributes them to rough sleepers in Birmingham City Centre and the surrounding urban areas.  The aim of this project is to provide rough sleepers with the necessities for survival: i.e. food, drink, clothing, tents, sleeping bags and hygiene products.  The Members of YAP also engage with the beneficiaries of the project to uncover some of the social and structural factors influencing homelessness.  This form of action is favoured by the organisation, as the Members are able to provide direct support and humanitarian assistance to homeless individuals, without being constrained by bureaucratic obstacles.

YAP also utilise ethnographic research methods in the H4tH Project, which includes audio and visual techniques, to capture the lived-experiences of homelessness and to establish patterns and trends in the circumstances of rough sleepers.  The aim of this methodological approach is to inform developments in local and national policies, so that their impact on reducing homelessness can be effectively assessed.  Ethnographic research also empowers the beneficiaries of the project.  Unstructured and semi-structured interviews capture first-hand accounts of the risks that push people into poverty and homelessness; whilst the information obtained from research helps to raise public awareness of some of the challenges faced by rough sleepers.
